Cambusbarron residents talk of 'desperation' after another crash on village road

Concerned Cambusbarron residents spoke of their “desperation” this week following the fourth accident on the same village road in the space of five months.

The latest accident on St Ninians Road occurred last Sunday evening, November 14, in which a car ended up on its roof.

It follows other incidents on St Ninians Road - which has a speed limit of 30mph – in July, September and October this year.

Schoolchildren use the route to walk to and from Cambusbarron and St Ninians primaries as well as Stirling High.

Parents are concerned for children’s safety, following an accident on Friday October 29 at 3.10pm, and have called on the council to take measures to reduce vehicles’ speed.

After Sunday’s incident village resident Sara Mackenzie said: “This is an area highly populated by families and a route frequented by runners and dog walkers such as myself.

“I would hate for it to take a serious civilian casualty before this issue is taken seriously - but unfortunately that’s the way it’s looking.”

And a Home Farm Road resident told the Observer: “We are desperate. What do we need to do to stop someone getting killed? Our pleas are falling on unresponsive ears.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said this week: “We were called to a crash involving a single car on St Ninians Road in Cambusbarron around 5.35pm on Sunday, November 14.

“One person was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital and enquiries are ongoing into the incident.”

Following last month’s incident Stirling MSP Evelyn Tweed called on the council to address Cambusbarron residents’ road safety fears.

She said lowering the speed limit would help to prevent further accidents.

Stirling Council said following the October accident - in which a car smashed into a wall at the entrance to Home Farm Road – that it had contacted Police Scotland “to fully understand the circumstances of the accidents” and would “take action if required”.

Stirling Council leader and Stirling West councillor Scott Farmer has asked council officers to look into the matter “to investigate these road safety concerns as a matter of priority and to report back possible solutions to address these.”

Council Conservative group leader and Stirling West councillor Neil Benny has said measures are required in a bid to slow traffic.

On Friday July 9 a man was taken to hospital after a car struck a wall at 6.50pm, and on Saturday, September 25 another man was taken to hospital following a crash involving two cars on St Ninians Road at 2pm. One of these vehicles flipped on its roof on the pavement.

On Friday October 29 around 3pm a car mounted a pavement and crashed into a wall. One of the drivers was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Following that incident a Change.org petition, which currently has around 700 signatures – was set up by Citizen Jaffray Court resident and mum-of-two Ashley McIlwraith entitled ‘Keep out kids and villagers safe’.

A Stirling Council spokesman this week said they had nothing to add to their previous statement.
