Cambridge United boss provides update on Jack Roles with Spurs star's loan deal set to expire

Cambridge United boss Colin Calderwood has stated he is "very hopeful" that Jack Roles will extend his loan spell at the Abbey Stadium.

The Tottenham youngster has really caught the eye on loan with the League Two side so far this season but his deal is set to expire on Sunday, January 5.

Roles, who netted the winner against Morecambe on Sunday, has so far scored five goals in 19 appearances for the U's and he did also win the PFA League Two player of the month and goal of the month award for October.

Whereas a number of Spurs' loanees have struggled away from the club due to injury and various other reasons, Roles has really excelled during his time in League Two.

Jose Mourinho: Harry Kane is fantastic

While not everything has gone smoothly for the midfielder, he has definitely done something right for Calderwood to want to extend his deal, with the ex-Spurs defender claiming that all discussions have gone well so far.

"At the minute all parties seem to agree - Jack, Tottenham and ourselves, so we’re very, very hopeful," he said, as reported by Cambridgeshire Live .

"It’s next week that the loan period ends. Discussions have started already and we’re really just wanting to dot the I’s and cross the T’s on it and we’re very hopeful.

"Paul Brush was here [at the Abbey for the Morecambe game] and he looks after a lot of the loan signings at Tottenham, so it’s positive.

"We’ll keep our fingers crossed, because you just never know when it’s a loan or a transfer."

It is Roles' first loan move away from Spurs to gain experience of playing first-team football and Calderwood has already seen an improvement in the 20-year-old's game.

"You can see his quality, you can see he’s developing, you can see there’s more power coming into his game," he added.

"I think he’s been able to work at a different tempo [compared to when he arrived].

"It was an interesting game for him [against Morecambe]. Not one that will live in his memory, but it's the type of game when [his involvement] helped us."
