Tesco 'explosion': Blast heard at supermarket with smell of chemical smoke

A loud explosion has been reported inside a Tesco store in Cambridge, with staff and shoppers being evacuated.

Emergency services headed to the supermarket following reports of chemical smoke on the premises.

Witnesses have reported hearing the noise with one saying they believe the air conditioning exploded, releasing a 'toxic gas' inside the store.

Shoppers at the superstore on Newmarket Road, Cambridge were evacuated shortly before 11am and it is thought that no one was under the aisle where it exploded.

A photo taken in the store appears to show white or grey smoke pouring from the ceiling above one of the shopping aisles.

Aisle 7 with fridges for milk and dairy products, where the air conditioning unit fell, is barricaded off with staff at either end.

Tesco staff were cordoning off the carpark and are not letting people drive in, but the store appears to have reopened, according to Cambridgeshire Live.
