Murder detectives are investigating after a woman in her early 30s was stabbed to death in south London.
Police and the London Ambulance Service rushed to John Ruskin Street, in Camberwell, at about 4.20am on New Year’s Day to reports of a stabbing.
Officers said paramedics battled to save the woman once they arrived, but she died at the property.
The woman’s death is the first knife killing of 2019, after the capital saw the highest rate of homicides in nearly a decade last year.
There were 132 homicides in 2018, with a majority of those who died being younger people
Police confirmed a 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and he was been taken to a south London station where he remains in custody.
Officers said the woman’s next of kin have not been informed yet and formal identification is yet to take place.
The woman’s death is the latest spate of violence in the area, after two young men were stabbed just streets away last year.
Rapper Siddique Kamara, also known as Incognito and SK, was found with stab wounds on Warham Street last August.
In July last year, a 25-year-old man also suffered non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed outside the Brandon Estate.
