As we’ve reached the midway point of the season, the calls continue for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s replacement as the third-year signal caller continues to struggle.
Every name from Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton to Tennessee’s Marcus Mariota has been tossed around. But there’s one name that’s been mentioned in Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton that could be gaining some traction.
With Newton on injured reserve with a foot injury — and backup Kyle Allen filling in solidly — NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said “it’s highly unlikely” Newton will not be with the Panthers next season, which would make him an attractive option for teams looking for a quarterback. Like the Bears.
In fact, Rapoport said that Newton wouldn’t be opposed to playing for the Bears.
“Chicago, if they’re in the market for a quarterback, is something that — from my understanding — Cam Newton would in fact welcome if that all worked out,” Rapoport said Sunday.
The Bears have eight more games to evaluate Trubisky and decide if he’s their quarterback moving forward. If they ultimately decide to give Trubisky another year, they’ll likely bring in another quarterback as competition, whether that’s in free agency, via trade or the 2020 NFL Draft.
If they decide he’s not, Newton is a possibility. And the Bears have two 2020 second-round draft picks to their name.
