Cam Newton sticks up for Julian Edelman following dropped touchdown

There was a lot to like and dislike about the New England Patriots loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. One crucial play was a Julian Edelman dropped touchdown. The dropped touchdown occurred two plays before Cam Newton failed to score on the goal line.

Although Edelman may have dropped the touchdown,  Newton is taking responsibility for the dropped pass. In what was a game with little margin for error, that mistake was certainly magnified.

Nevertheless, Newton stuck up for his teammate on WEEI’s “Greg Hill Show” as the Patriots move on to a tough Las Vegas Raiders team next Sunday.

“When I talked to Jules, he was like, ‘Man, I could have got it,’ ” Newton said. “And I knew it was catchable for him and his expectations. But it came in with a lot of heat, and it was high. There was a combination of that. … It could have been a better ball. I knew it could have been a better ball. And in those types of situations, that separates the good from the great from the elite.”

In what was a back-and-forth game, the Patriots offense seemed to be clicking on all cylinders, with the exception of a couple plays. Now, focus shifts to the Raiders, as the Patriots look to improve to 2-1.
