Cam Newton seeing foot specialist in Green Bay, unlikely to play vs. Packers next Sunday

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is traveling to Green Bay on Friday to see Dr. Robert Anderson, a noted foot specialist and assistant team doctor for the Packers, and it’s now unlikely Newton will play next Sunday against the Packers at Lambeau Field.

The Panthers provided an update on Newton’s status on Friday.

“I spent a long time speaking with Cam this week and he’s done everything he possibly can in his rehab process to get his foot to 100 percent,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point. The next step is for him to go see Dr. Anderson and gather more information.”

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Panthers believe Newton’s return is “a long way off.”

Second-year quarterback Kyle Allen has started the last five games for the Panthers. He led Carolina to four wins while throwing seven touchdown passes and three interceptions.

The Panthers play the Tennessee Titans on Sunday before traveling to Green Bay for Week 10.

Newton led the Panthers to wins over the Packers in 2015 and 2017, throwing seven touchdowns and just one interception while rushing for over 100 total yards and another score. The Panthers scored 68 points in the two games.

If Newton doesn’t play, it will represent the second time in three weeks the Packers have avoided playing an MVP quarterback.
