Cam Newton is trying to change the way he shops. The New England Patriots quarterback is one of the most stylish NFL players — if not, the most. But it has come at a tremendous financial cost.
During one of Newton’s video blogs, the quarterback reflected on how he needs to adjust his mindset about buying clothes.
“One of my New Years resolutions is to not buy high fashion. I want to be more of a thrift-store shopper,” Newton said. “I want to be more of a vintage shopper. I want to be more of a person that finds gems in stores that are less expensive, and to still be able to give it its fine look, but I’m still myself.
“I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars, maybe even millions of dollars on clothes that I only wore once, so to be able to recycle the closest, so to speak, is something that’s challenging. But at the same time, it’s going to be fun to do so throughout this whole year.”
It will be interesting to see how, if at all, that changes the way Newton dresses on game day, which was one of the most fun things to monitor before and after Patriots games. Admittedly, his clothing caused some controversy, with retired NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia accusing Newton of being too bold. But Newton gracefully brushed that criticism aside and continued to express himself — as it should be.
“For it to be shorts, suspenders, bow tie, over-sweater, those are just little things; I don’t want to look like nobody else. I want to be uniquely me. … Different is good,” Newton told WEEI on Nov. 13 during an appearance on “The Greg Hill Show.” “I want to promote being yourself, being uniquely you. And I think if we have more people thinking like that, this world would be in a better place.”
