Cam Newton is being underpaid by the Patriots, but he says it’s ‘not about money’

Cam Newton doesn’t care about the money — and he seems to want to make sure people like Richard Sherman know that.

The newly minted New England Patriots quarterback posted to Instagram on Thursday to defend his decision to sign an obviously small contract, a one-year deal worth between $1.05 million and $7.5 million, per NFL Network.

The deal includes just $550,000 in guaranteed money and the veteran minimum ($1.05 million) in salary. He can reach the top tier of his contract by hitting a series of bonuses by playing each week and hitting performance benchmarks. Meanwhile, Nick Foles and Ryan Fitzpatrick will earn $8 million and Marcus Mariota will make $7.5 million. But again, Newton doesn’t care about what seems to be a wage disparity.
