Cam Newton gets into scuffle with a pair of former Patriots LBs in Week 1

Cam Newton and Elandon Roberts had to be separated after the New England Patriots’ 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 at Gillette Stadium.

As the two teams left the field, Newton and Roberts, a former Patriots linebacker, seemed to engage in a war of words, which resulted in small scuffle. Kyle Van Noy, another former Patriots linebacker, had his role, too. He and Newton did some shoving immediately after the final snap of the game.

Though the current Patriots absolutely adore Newton, the former Patriots are apparently not his biggest fans. Both Van Noy and Roberts left New England this offseason for Miami in free agency.

Here’s a look at the moment.

It looks like tight end Ryan Izzo, who has now played with both Roberts and Newton, played mediator and helped break up the argument.

Even so, Newton drew Bill Belichick’s praise after the game.

“He puts himself last and puts his team first. He’s done a tremendous job there,” Belichick said in a postgame press conference Sunday. “He’s a very, very unselfish player. He’s a great teammate. He’s earned everybody’s respect daily. He just continues to do everything he can to help our team.”
