Cam Newton first Panthers player to be named to NFL Top 100 list for 2019

Every year, NFL Network releases a ranking of the top 100 players in the league as voted on by the players themselves. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton ranked No. 25 on the list last year at this time on the heels of a strong 2017 campaign that saw Newton lead the team to a 11-5 record and a wild card berth.

This year, Newton’s ranking dropped off quite a bit. He came in at No. 87 on the list, just ahead of Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward and behind Lions cornerback Darius Slay.

Newton no doubt would have ranked higher if not for the shoulder issues that limited him during the second half of the 2018 season.

Cam’s career high ranking was No. 1 back in 2016 after his MVP campaign. He has made the list every year he’s been in the NFL.

We’re sure to see a few more Carolina players make this year’s list. Linebacker Luke Kuechly and defensive tackle Kawann Short would both be snubs if they didn’t make the cut. Running back Christian McCaffrey should also make his #NFLTop100 debut.
