Calvin Bassey turns Ajax inspiration as Rangers record breaker provides big lesson for Dutch starlet

Calvin Bassey is already proving to be someone Ajax youngsters are modelling their game off, just months after leaving Rangers.

The versatile left-sided defender left Ibrox for a club-record fee in the summer and has been a regular for the Eredivisie side. Some of his displays have been met with criticism in the Dutch media but it appears clear that within the four walls at the Amsterdam giants, he is held in high regard.

That is certainly the case for 16-year-old Ajax player Jorrel Hato, a promising player out in Marbella for their warm weather training camp. It was tough to integrate with senior pros initially but he's told club media that Rangers ' record sale Bassey is one that he's been able to get tips from, as they play in similar positions. He said: "In training I was also next to him as a left-back this week. Then you see how he does things. Defensively he is very strong.

"I try to stand my ground defensively. I am fast, strong. I have peace of mind with the ball and try to pass through different lines. The trainers know who I am, but I want to show myself here. I also enjoy being on the field with such players.”
