Calverton residents hit out at 'manic' speeding as police launch crackdown

Calverton residents say speeding and parking issues on a main road through the village are becoming a nightmare.

Nottinghamshire Police have been carrying out speed checks along Main Street in Calverton after they were made aware of the problems.

The force was out in the area on Sunday, June 27 and issued four speeding tickets to motorists as they try and tackle the issue.

Local businesses have told Nottinghamshire Live the problems with speeding cars is exacerbated by bad parking near the village's school.

One business owner on Main Street, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It is an issue, definitely.

"I work here six mornings a week and it happens quite often. This road is worst around school times - it's a nightmare. Cars park here, there and everywhere.

"It is absolutely manic, to be honest. I think they need to do something about it, maybe a 'no parking' zone or something like that.

"It's very manic because there are a lot of businesses around here and speeding is very bad. It's not as bad at school times because it's just so busy, but it's a dangerous combination for people to deal with."

Joanne Wright, of C & M E Wright repair shop on Main Street, said: "I would say we don't have as much speeding where we are.

"We have the school nearby and so the parking is the biggest issue - it is often absolutely gridlocked at certain times.

"I think that's because we are bang in the middle of the road - you get speeding problems at either end with people coming in or out of the village.

"But I couldn't say we have a speeding issue in front of the garage."

Police's Operation Reacher team responded to concerns passed onto them by residents and councillors and are now encouraging the public to let them know if another area requires their attention.

Councillor Boyd Elliott, who represents the village on Gedling Borough Council, admitted Calverton has a problem with speeding vehicles.

He said: "We have regular complaints about Main Street and we have been in contact with local police teams about it.

"It's good to see them being proactive about it. It's not just Main Street, Flats Lane is another area we get a lot of complaints about.

"The problems stem from people coming in or out of the village essentially. There is clearly a parking problem on Main Street, too.

"We will be continuing to raise these problems with police - hopefully some measures such as interactive speed signs can be added."

A spokesperson for Gedling Police said: "We have many more locations we are planning to get to but if you have concerns about a particular road let us know."
