Calum Waters desperate to put injury setback behind him and resume Kilmarnock career

Calum Waters hopes his injury setback can be put behind him as he looks to fire Kilmarnock to Premiership safety.

The left-back was sidelined after undergoing surgery in January and he has yet to play a match this year.

Kilmarnock won 2-0 against Motherwell in December the last time he appeared for the Ayrshire side, and the club will be hoping that's a good omen heading into today's clash.

Speaking ahead of the clash he said: "It has been frustrating this season personally, I had to get an operation in January.

"But now I am back, raring to go and I want to contribute to the team.

"I want us to do well again, hopefully between now and the end of the season I am called upon and I can help out."

Waters has no doubts that his side can escape the danger of relegation despite being bottom with six games to go, and he is adamant one win will spur them on.

He said: "It definitely can, we have been trying to get it for a while now but it's at the point where we need to get it to kick us on.

"I think it's true though, one win will lift the confidence, the boys are staying positive because that's what you need to do.

"We definitely know we can get out of this, at the start of the season we were around the top half of the table.

"We still have the same squad as we had then, but we are where we are and we need to change that.

"We definitely think we can stay up, but it's a case of doing it on the park."

He added: "We have some good players, and it's fine saying that we are a good team but we are where we are.

"I think we have to accept that we haven't been good enough this season and we have to start showing what we can do."

Meanwhile, Waters says star striker Kyle Lafferty has been a breath of fresh air in the dressing room.

The Northern Irish hitman loves playing pranks on his team-mates and Waters reckons that's key to lifting the mood.

He said: "He has been a good character for the dressing room.

"When you are down at the bottom of the table people can be really down, but he has been great and keeping the spirits up.

"You need to watch when he's about because you don't know what he's going to do, he's always up to something!

"He hasn't got me yet, hopefully it stays that way.

"He has been a great addition both on and off the park.

"It's good to have someone like that, we all have pride in what we do so it's natural to be down when it's not going your way.

"So it's important to have big characters like that keeping the spirits up in the team."
