Calum Chambers sends emotional message to fans after Arsenal return

Calum Chambers has sent an emotional message after making his long-awaited return to Arsenal first-team action.

Chambers made his first senior appearances in almost a year in Thursday night's Europa League match against Rapid Vienna, after recovering from a serious knee injury.

The defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during Arsenal's 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea on December 29 of last year.

More than 11 months on and he was back in action for Mikel Arteta's side, replacing Shkodran Mustafi for the final 20 minutes of their 4-1 victory over Austrian opposition at the Emirates Stadium.

The result saw Arsenal secure top spot in their Europa League group, with a game to spare.

The match was also notable as it was the Gunners' first home fixture since fans were allowed back into stadiums in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Under Tier 2 restrictions, 2,000 supporters were able to watch the action from inside the Emirates Stadium.

On Friday, Chambers took to Twitter to comment on his return.

He tweeted: "Last night was full of emotion...

"Firstly, it was amazing to be able to welcome fans back into the Emirates!

"Secondly, it's been 11 months since my surgery and it was a special moment to be back sharing the pitch with 11 men on it!

"A great team performance, we keep grinding."

Alexandre Lacazette got the ball rolling for Arsenal, before Pablo Mari and Eddie Nketiah struck to give the home side a 3-0 half-time lead.

Kohya Kitagawa pulled one back for Rapid soon after the break but substitute Emile Smith Rowe rounded off the scoring for Mikel Arteta's side.

Arsenal are now through to the knockout stages of the competition as group winners, with attention now switching back towards the league.

And the Gunners are back in Premier League action on Sunday, when they visit North London rivals Tottenham.
