Calum Chambers on what Arsenal's clean sheet at Everton means for their start under Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta watched on as Arsenal secured a 0-0 draw away at Everton in the first game of his reign as head coach of the Gunners and Calum Chambers believes the team's clean sheet will allow the Spaniard to start his work on the right footing.

The match at Goodison Park lacked quality but neither team were allowed to break the deadlock by some determined defending at either ends of the pitch.

Young winger Bukayo Saka was deployed at left-back in Freddie Ljungberg's final match as interim boss while Ainsley Maitland-Niles continued at right-back with Hector Bellerin injured.

David Luiz and Chambers were the pairing at the centre-back and the Englishman has praised the efforts of the team as a whole for stopping Everton picking them apart to beat Bernd Leno in goal.

"A clean sheet away from home at a place like this is never easy," he told BT Sport.

"I think we put in a great shift today. It was a young team out there and everyone put in 110% effort. Everyone can be proud of their performance."

Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Everton was their first clean sheet since the first weekend of the season and Chambers is now looking to kick on under Arteta after stopping the rot at the back away from home.

"Obviously still there are things we can work on but it's a good start for us," he said.

The Gunners are set to experience their first training session under Arteta and his coaching staff at London Colney on Monday.

Chambers spent last season on loan at Fulham where he played as a defensive midfielder but has returned to the Emirates Stadium to stake a claim to a role in the first team as a centre-back.

The 24-year-old was signed by Arsenal in 2014 after an impressive breakthrough season for Southampton.

He was hailed as an important player for he future by Arsene Wenger at the time who hinted that he could have a role to play in midfield someday.

For Saints he had lined up as a right-back and left the club for north London in the same transfer window that saw Luke Shaw become the most expensive teenager in world football when Manchester United made their move for him.

Chambers will be hoping to cement his place in Arteta's plans after making gains in the first team this season under Unai Emery and Ljungberg.
