Cally Munchy: New pan-African restaurant concept to launch at The Africa Centre in Southwark

A new restaurant residency will launch at The Africa Centre this month, taking the space previously occupied by Tatale.

Cally Munchy, a pop-up concept founded in 2015 by British-Nigerian chef and entrepreneur Ebenezer Sogunro, is described as a “pan-African” experience and will open at the centre, in Southwark, for a six-month term on August 16.

Operating until now as a street food and catering business, Sogunro has taken street food stalls to the likes of Shoreditch, Carnaby Street, and Canary Wharf, while catering for, among others, Nike, Ted Baker, the National History Museum, and Eton College.

His menu features dishes such as beef suya, jollof rice, and kelewele — spiced, fried plantain — and these and more will be on offer at The Africa Centre as a la carte.

While training as a chef, Sogunro said he saw a “lack of representation, commercial display and modernisation of the foods that derive from African cultures,” and has since gone on to serve everything from jollof katsu curry to moi moi burgers.

Most recently, he opened Cally Bao, a pop-up on Orchard Place combining the flavours of West Africa with Korean buns, and before that took loaded fries to Wireless Festival.

Cally Munchy at The Africa Centre marks Sogunro’s first long-term residency for the brand, having started out round the corner in south east London.

The highly-rated Tatale, meanwhile, closed in June after a year of trading. Founder and chef Akwasi Brenya-Mensa has yet to reveal where he’ll be taking the restaurant next.
