Callum Wilson still understood to be in thoughts of England boss Gareth Southgate

Callum Wilson remains very much in the thoughts of England boss Gareth Southgate - despite missing out on Euro 2020.

It's understood that Southgate remains an admirer of Wilson and was impressed with his first season on Tyneside.

The Newcastle United star picked up an untimely hamstring problem in the 4-2 win over Leicester City to end any outside hope of making into the 26-man squad.

But Wilson - who netted 12 goals for United in his first season - was still on the fringes of the squad when he picked up the knock.

Wilson posted pictures of himself back on the training field as he prepares for July 5 when the Magpies return to Benton for pre-season.

The striker last played for England in the 6-0 thrashing against Bulgaria in 2019 when he won the last of his four caps.

Having scored on his Three Lions debut vs the United States in a Wembley win 12 months before the rout in eastern Europe.

If Wilson is fit and in form, Southgate will consider him for the World Cup qualifying clash against Hungary in Budapest in September.

With coach Graeme Jones now in Southgate's inner circle, and England struggling for goals so far in Euro 2020, Wilson should be up for the challenge.

Back in May, he spoke of his desire to continue firing on all cylinders for club and country, telling nufc.co.uk: "For me, I've not won cups, I've not won leagues - other than the Championship, I've not done massive things within the game for club and country - but these little sentimental ones, they're priceless really and I just want to keep adding to them.

"Like I say, being from where I'm from, growing up I didn't think that I would get this far in life, really."
