There was also a return for club skipper Jamaal Lascelles who missed the back end of last season through injury.
Isaac Hayden, last seen at Brighton in a 3-0 defeat, was also back after a knee problem.

Scotland international Ryan Fraser was also deemed fit enough to start against Steve Watson's York side.
Bruce started with Joelinton and Callum Wilson while there were notable omissions for Jonjo Shelvey and Florian Lejeune.
Yoshinori Muto, back from a loan at Eibar, was on the bench along with the Longstaff brothers.
Karl Darlow was out after testing positive with Covid while Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie are self-isolating.
