Callum Wilson's impressive response when asked about playing for England at the Qatar World Cup

Callum Wilson still believes he has time to force his way into England's World Cup squad in 12 months time.

Gareth Southgate's side booked their place in Qatar for next year's winter World Cup with a 10-0 victory away to San Marino to ensure they topped Group I.

Wilson watched on as Harry Kane edged closer to being England's all-time top scorer, but still feels that there might be places up for grabs under Southgate.

It was the former Middlesbrough boss who handed Wilson his England debut in 2018 when he scored in the 3-0 win over the United States.

Untimely injuries have restricted Wilson to four caps so far but he is still very much in the reckoning and on the fringes of Southgate's squad.

Wilson is far from forgotten by England and the FA still have listed as a squad member on their official website.

Recently England's Euro 2020 coach Graeme Jones stated that Wilson was still "highly thought of" by his country.

When asked about his chances of getting to the World Cup, Wilson told Chronicle Live: "For me, I had one eye on the international squad that was recently announced.

"I was working hard to try to get myself back into that.

"I scored my goals in the month but it wasn't enough at this moment in time.

"I'll keep working hard and plugging away and make sure I focus on my club football.

"Then come March time hopefully the international manager and myself have put me back in that frame.

"He will have me to choose from again.

"And that's all you can do as a player, focus on your club week-in, week-out and then it should lead you to getting into the squad.

"Hopefully my goals will help me take us up the league and a lot more people will take notice."

The World Cup line-up in terms of teams is starting to take shape with the draw for the play-offs later this month before the overall draw for Qatar taking place in April.

By then Wilson will hope he has nudged Southgate in his direction as he eyes the spring international fixtures with the Three Lions.

When asked about players who could still grab a seat on the plane to the Middle East, Southgate, speaking after the 10-0 thrashing of San Marino, said: "The door isn't closed to anybody."
