Callum Wilson on the penalty know how Newcastle United have been missing

Callum Wilson has revealed he thought about changing his mind amid a long and nervous VAR wait at St James' Park ahead of his game-changing penalty.

However, he stuck with his initial decision and put on a display that delivered a big win for the Magpies at St James' Park.

Wilson's double was vital in the end after England's Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted in stoppage time.

Wilson said: "We worked on getting across the near post.

"As I saw him swing his leg I got clever and let him kick me.

"There was a delay, I thought about changing things, but I kept my cool."

Wilson grabbed a second late on and admitted he wanted to grab his first hat-trick before his number came up moments later.

He said: "It was nice to get another; I was just disappointed to come off with five minutes to go with a hat-trick pending."

Newcastle now move into the top half of the table and Wilson said: "We’ve looked quite solid and we can build on that platform.

"Scoring at home is nice, but you want to be celebrating with the fans."
