Callum Wilson honest verdict as 'unreal start' quickly went downhill

Callum Wilson admits Newcastle United's performance went "downhill" after his second minute opener.

Newcastle's defeat leaves them deep in relegation trouble sitting on three points with 30 games to go.

But the Magpies' season does not get any easier with a trip to Crystal Palace next weekend before a home clash with Chelsea.

Wilson said: "It was an unreal start, great atmosphere.

"When you walked out you could feel it, you could feel the crowd was with you. We started great but things went downhill from there.

“You work hard through your rehab for moments like this

"There are difficult, gruelling moments and I tried to affect the game today.

“The fans feel it is a new era and something to build on.

"We want to keep the fans close, they spur you on like the 12th man at this place.

"It was stop-start but you have to be ready for those moments."

Wilson also spoke of the supporter who was taken to hospital after suffering a medical emergency in the first half.

He said: "I am glad the guy is OK and sending him our best wishes."
