Callum Wilson hails Newcastle's character as United grab battling point at Crystal Palace

Callum Wilson has hailed Newcastle United's "great character" after they clawed a point at Selhurst Park.

The No 9 produced a wonderful overhead kick to help secure a score draw in the capital and pick up the club's fourth point of the season.

Looking back on the clash at Palace, which the Eagles dominated, Wilson said: "We were unfortunate to go behind but we showed great character to get back into the game.

"We were hoping it was a foul [for Benteke's disallowed goal].

"Two players were on the floor so we knew something must have happened.

"After the week we had it was important to get a positive result.

"It’s a point on the board and something to build on.

"It’s baby steps – we’re going in the right way."

Wilson took his goal fantastically well and took his own tally to four goals in just five matches this term.

He said: "I was waiting for one opportunity in the game.

"Sometimes they come so high so it was an instinctive finish.

"I was glad it found the back of the net.

"You have to stay professional.

"We’re professional athletes at the end of the day.

"Whether the change is positive or not, you have to get on with it and try and get a result."
