Callum Wilson had a Newcastle return date in mind and the next few days could be crucial

Callum Wilson admits he 'can't wait to get back out there' and the coming days could have a big say on when the Newcastle United striker will return to action.

The 29-year-old has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in Newcastle's 3-2 win against Southampton last month and the Magpies have certainly missed him.

Wilson was initially ruled out for between six to eight weeks, but Steve Bruce has been keen to 'box clever' and not rush the club's top scorer back given the nature of his muscle injury.

Following a month-long rehabilitation camp in Bournemouth, Wilson returned to individual training at Newcastle's Benton base a couple of weeks ago and the striker admitted he had a return date 'in mind'.

Why Newcastle United supporters want Steve Bruce sacked

Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, who has also been sidelined, with a groin injury, were pictured working separately from the rest of their team-mates out on the training pitches last week with rehabilitation fitness coach Cristian Fernandez.

The next big challenge for the pair will be seeing how they fare when they join in with the rest of the group ahead of Sunday's crucial game against Spurs.

Ahead of the visit of Jose Mourinho's side to St James' Park, Wilson posted a short compilation video of some of his best moments in a Newcastle shirt on his social media channels.

Wilson declared that he 'can't wait to get back out there' and also used an hourglass with sand emoji to perhaps hint it was only a matter of time before he took to the field again.

Newcastle have yet to win a game this season without Wilson and the striker has been directly involved in 54% of the black-and-whites' league goals.

Newcastle were 10 points clear of the relegation zone when Wilson hobbled off last month, but there is now just a two-point gap between the Magpies and 18th-placed Fulham albeit Bruce's side have a game in hand.

The England international has previously vowed to 'do everything' he can to avoid having back-to-back relegations on his CV after going down with Bournemouth last season.
