Callum Wilson injury update as Newcastle United striker returns to training ahead of Chelsea

Callum Wilson has returned to training for Newcastle United ahead of their clash with Chelsea - but will be assessed carefully in the build-up to the game.

Wilson suffered a hamstring problem against Southampton in the 2-0 defeat before the international break and limped off early.

But Steve Bruce is hopeful he can be involved against the Blues at St James' Park.

However, Scotland international Ryan Fraser is out and Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey face further fitness tests.

Bruce said: "Ryan won't make it, but Callum has a chance. If there is any risk whatsoever we won't.

"He has trained in the last two days so we will see. The boy wants to play.

"It's a bit like with Ryan and Jonjo is we have to make sure is 100 per cent right."

When asked about Shelvey and Ritchie, Bruce added: "It might be early but he's trained, Matt Ritchie is another one in and around the group again.

"Hopefully more will be available for selection."
