Callum Smith hints at move up to light-heavyweight after Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez defeat

Callum Smith has hinted that he might move up to light-heavyweight after being beaten by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in Texas.

Alvarez defeated Smith by unanimous decision with scores of 119-109, 119-109 and 117-111 to unify the WBC and WBA super-middleweight titles.

Despite starting well against the Mexican, the final few rounds were very one-sided with Smith getting caught with a number of shots to the head and body.

And speaking afterwards, Smith believes his time may have come to move up from super middleweight to light-heavyweight.

“I'm devastated. I came here to win. No excuses, he was very good,” Smith said after the fight.

“Maybe I've been on the weight too long. I don't feel as dominant late on in fights. It could have been a better version of me tonight. He performed and was the better man.

“He is smart to be honest. He is clever. He closes ground, sets traps and before you know it he's closed the ground up. I maybe let him close the ground up too easily.”

But when asked directly if he will step up in weight, Smith admitted he plans to spend time with his family before making any decisions.

He said: “I need to go and spend time with family and decide what is next for me next year.”

While Eddie Hearn, Smith’s promoter, revealed after the fight he thought his fighter detached his bicep in the second or third round.

“You just saw the pound-for-pound king. Callum Smith is so tough. He have a great interview there,” the Matchroom boxing chief said.

“I think he detached his bicep in the second or third round but it didn't really matter.

“It was a masterclass from Canelo. I just left Smith's changing room and everyone is talking about Alvarez. He's just so good.

“I'm proud of Callum. He never stopped throwing but he came up against the best fighter on the planet.”

Hearn also believes Alvarez will take on British WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders next year before a third fight against Gennady Golovkin.

"He loves to take on the best, he's a hell of a fighter. Billy Joe Saunders and then GGG in that order," he said.

"I think he's going to want to pick up the other belts in the division. I think he'll go for Billy next."
