Callum Robinson says Shane Duffy header spared his own blushes

Callum Robinson was preparing to be the hero against Denmark on Friday before Shane Duffy stole the glory with his powerful leap of faith in the penalty box.

There were no hard feelings on his part, but the Ireland attacker hopes manager Mick McCarthy doesn’t hold it against him that he fluffed his lines with a late counter attack.

Robinson was about to be introduced from the bench as Alan Judge stood over the free-kick which led to Ireland’s equaliser, and when Preston North End man was thrown on for the final few minutes a breakaway that could have sealed all three points was squandered.

“It’s frightening. Duff is key to all our set-pieces. Judgey, obviously I’m gutted for him [breaking his wrist], but it was an unbelievable ball.

"All he had to do was get his head on it, which he does well, and he always gets those goals.

“We got the draw and obviously I had the chance there on the break. I think if I was on a little bit longer I probably would have had a little bit more composure on it, but it’s a massive result for us.”

The draw keeps Denmark at arm’s length – they’ve yet to win either of their two games with draws in both – and Robinson is eying up an enjoyable summer

“The result stops them getting a couple more points and it’s another point for us. I think anyone before the game would have said the draw was better for us than them.

“They’ve drawn two now, we’ve got two wins and a draw and now we need to be positive against Gibraltar and hopefully get a result there. If we do that, we’ll have a right chance. We’ll be right up there.

“That’s what I’ve said before in previous interviews, we’ve got a really good squad here and we’re buzzing now that we’ve got some good results.”
