Callum Robinson fuming that Ireland were denied 94th minute winner against Portugal

Callum Robinson was fuming that Ireland were denied a 94th minute winner against Portugal at the Aviva Stadium

Matt Doherty calmly fired home into an empty net but ref Jesus Gil Manzano of Spain disallowed the goal for a foul by Will Keane, who had only come on for his debut, on goalkeeper Rui Patrício.

“I don’t know why that was disallowed, keepers get protected a bit and Gavin Bazunu won’t like me saying that," said Robinson.

“Will Keane put his body in and he should do that and we scored a goal.

"We had the courage to play out of the back tonight and had chances. I had a few chances tonight and it proves the only way is up and that is the way we are going."

Robinson was named man of the match after the scoreless draw as Ireland maintained their recent promising run of form, with the final World Cup qualifier to come in Luxembourg on Sunday.

The West Brom striker felt that given the opposition, it was a result to be happy with, even though Portugal lost Pepe to a red card in the final stages.

“I thought we did great in the game, Portugal are a tough opponent with all their great individuals, it isn’t just Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, they’ve Felix coming on," Robinson told RTE.

“If we’d taken one or two of our chances, we could have won but again it shows how far we’ve come.

“I just try to get in the right areas and it didn’t go to plan like my hat-trick games but I try to be a threat as much as I can. I did my best and we move on to Luxembourg.

“It’s a tough challenge but we proved tonight we could compete with the best so hopefully we can get the result.”
