Callum O'Dowda return a timely boost for Stephen Kenny as Ireland prepare to launch World Cup bid

Callum O'Dowda put two months of injury hell behind him today in a timely boost for Stephen Kenny.

The Ireland boss was reeling after Jack Byrne joined a growing injury list that already included James McClean and John Egan.

But Bristol City ace O’Dowda returned to the training ground this morning having not played since St Stephen’s Day.

Kenny is a big fan of the 25-year-old but he shipped a hamstring injury in that Championship win over Wycombe.

But despite being put through his paces today, Robins boss Nigel Pearson says he won’t rush O’Dowda back.

Team-mate Nathan Baker also returned today and Pearson said: “There’s a temptation, due to necessity to hurry things along.

“But when they’re back I want them to stay back. We’ll get them back when they’re ready to play.

“It’s not about putting them in a difficult position, they all want to be fit to play but we have to deal with availability difficulties and that happens in football.”

Earlier today, APOEL revealed that ex-Shamrock Rovers star Byrne required a back operation that would keep him out for three months.
