Callum Mortimer makes pro debut on basketball court

Livingston basketball ace Callum Mortimer admits he’s still smiling after making his pro debut with the Glasgow Rocks last week.

The 16-year-old, who has represented Scotland at a number of youth age groups, also marked the occasion by scoring the first points of his career with a neat lay-up during the Rocks’ 101-81 BBL Cup win over the Sheffield Sharks.

A delighted Callum said: “It was a brilliant feeling to get on to the court and get my first game and points for the Rocks. I’m still smiling and I think I will be for a long time.”

The youngster signed for Scotland’s only pro basketball team in the summer and, while delighted with his progress so far, he’s not resting on his laurels, saying: “The aim now is to make it a more regular occurrence and get into as many games as possible. I just have to keep training hard and improving my game and hopefully the minutes on the court will come from that.

“I train with them once a week while I’m at school and any more days when I can and it’s been great being able to be part of a professional team.

“I’m really enjoying it but it’s also hard work. I’m taking on board everything that the coach and the rest of the players are saying and hopefully that will stand me in good stead going forward. I just want to contine to improve.”
