Callum McGregor's Celtic injury 'fairly significant' as Hoops facing lengthy spell without captain

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has provided a worrying update on captain Callum McGregor.

The midfielder was subbed off in the first half of their 3-1 Champions League defeat to RB Leipzig midweek with a suspected knee problem and Postecoglou said in the immediate aftermath of the game that it didn't look great for McGregor. He is a key player for Celtic and has displayed exemplary leadership since taking over the captaincy from Scott Brown.

But his manager could now be preparing for an extended period without him and that would be a major blow, with Celtic still to play 11 games between now and the World Cup break in November. That includes three Champions League matches as they bid to make the last 16. McGregor is suspended for this weekend's Premiership match away at St Johnstone after a red card against Motherwell last week but his return may be further away.

Postecoglou conceded to Sky Sports: "He's off to see a specialist today, it's fairly significant. He's a fantastic player.

"Beyond that, it's him influence on and off the field as a leader. There's not one person that can replace that, it will be a case of the other guys stepping up and filling the breach.

"Obviously he is disappointed because he's such a big part of how we play our football and what we've created here so I know he'll be working hard, whatever the timeline to get back."
