Callum McGregor's brilliant retort at Celtic bash after cutting fan barb from host Peter Martin

Callum McGregor and TV presenter Peter Martin had fans in stitches at a Celtic gala night after the host jokingly turned on fans for suggesting the classy midfielder should be sold in 2016.

The glamour event at Glasgow’s DoubleTree by Hilton last night was held in celebration of the club's six Treble achievements, a trio of which have come in the last three years.

Former heroes Joos Valgaeren, Vidar Riseth, Jonathan Gould, Rab Douglas, Bobby Petta, Bobby Lennox, John Clark and Jim Craig were all in attendance and were interviewed on stage by Martin along with the current squad.

Jock Stein won the treble twice as boss in 1967 and 1969 before Martin O'Neil stunned Scottish football by doing the same in 2001 despite huge transfer spending at Rangers .

Looking back to the invincible treble of of 2016/17 under Brendan Rodgers , McGregor says its only with the passing of time that he has begun to realise the special nature of that season's achievement.

He said: "Obviously it was an incredible season when you look back on it now. As you said we have been doing it for three seasons now. Now when you look back you realise how special that first season was.

"To be so good and winning game after game, training every single day trying to get better and trying to get better as a squad and we did. All of us are really proud of that."

Allways one to inject a bit of fun into proceedings, Martin added his own spin to much laugher from the crowd.

He said: "I think it must be especially pleasing for you in that first season of that treble because most of these p****s (pointing to the fans in attendance) wanted you sold."

A laughing McGregor replied: "I'm glad you said it!"
