Callum McGregor in Celtic injury update as he plans to step up rehab during Sydney Cup trip

Callum McGregor has revealed he plans to step up his Celtic recovery this week in Australia.

Ange Postecoglou and his troops are Down Under as they take part in the Sydney Super Cup as part of their winter training camp due to the World Cup shutdown. The trip is viewed as a vital part of preparations for the second half of the season with the Hoops nine points clear of Rangers at the top of the Premiership and still competing for the ViaPlay and Scottish Cups next year.

Skipper McGregor has been an absentee since picking up an injury in the Champions League. Matt O'Riley has adopted his deeper role in recent times but the midfielder has revealed he is progressing with his road to recovery and plans to join in part of the sessions this week, labelling the next five to six days as 'important' for him.

Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: "Hopefully I will be joining bits of the sessions this week and just progressing the rehab. It will be an important five, six days for me as well. I am looking forward to getting back on the grass with the boys."

Celtic come up against Sydney FC in their first match before facing English Premier League outfit Everton - who are reported to be keen on Postecoglou if Frank Lampard is axed.

It's a return to Australia for the Hoops boss and McGregor knows he will want his troops to put on a good show on home turf and making sure the team he selects performs to the highest level.

He added: "More of the same, we understand the way we want to play. I'm sure the gaffer will be keen for us to put on a good show coming back to his home country. He will be putting pressure on the lads to make sure they are performing well. Good football, good intensity and want to have two victories as well.

"These guys get up in the middle of the night to watch the games and this is an opportunity to see us live and it's important we don't disappoint. We show them the best of ourselves and put on a good show for them."
