Callum McGregor admits captaincy 'challenge' as he opens up on midfield partners

Callum McGregor insists Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has strong midfield options within his squad.

The Hoops captain was partnered by Tom Rogic and David Turnbull in midfield for the 2-0 win over Motherwell at the weekend.

Australian international Rogic set up Jota's opening goal before Turnbull scored a sensational second against his former club at Fir Park.

Nir Bitton started the previous game against Aberdeen and McGregor believes all of Celtic's midfielders possess different qualities.

He said: "The manager wants to control the ball and possession.

"We've got guys in there that can do that. David and Tom are probably more forward thinking in terms of their positioning, but there's a reason for that in terms of what the manager wants in certain games.

"Nir started at Aberdeen because we probably needed more physicality in there and a defensive brain.

"He's got good options in there to pick and choose for certain games."

It was a summer of upheaval at Parkhead as key players departed and Postecoglou added a host of new signings.

McGregor was handed the armband after Scott Brown's departure to Aberdeen and the 28-year-old admits it's taken time for everybody to get used to each other.

"It has obviously been a challenge," McGregor admitted. "New players have joined the group and it's been about finding out what they're good at, where they can get better, what makes them tick and how do we become successful as a group.

"You've got to think of all those factors as well. It's been about spending more time together and understanding each other's game.

"While we are at this clubs, we have one common goal to make this club successful."
