Callum Hudson-Odoi's perfect response after Frank Lampard challenges Chelsea star

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has answered Frank Lampard's challenge with a well-taken goal against Rennes.

The 20-year-old burst onto the scene during the 2018/19 season but his progress has somewhat stalled over the past 18 months or so amid a combination of injury and lack of playing time.

With Chelsea splashing the cash in the summer transfer window to bring in the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, competition for places in attack has increased.

As a result, Hudson-Odoi's opportunities have been limited so far this season as Lampard looks to strike the right balance in attack.

Can Chelsea challenge for the title?

Prior to the Rennes clash, of the winger's 10 appearances across all competitions this term only four have been as a starter and he's completed 90 minutes just twice.

However, the England U21 star - who scored twice in the recent international break - has been given a chance to impress Lampard in Tuesday evening's Champions League clash against the Ligue 1 outfit.

Named in the starting XI ahead of Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi has been told exactly what to do in order to become a regular in the Blues team.

"(I want to see) his qualities. You have a big squad for a reason, and Callum is a young and developing player," Lampard told BT Sport before kick-off.

"He’s made some good performances, I liked him when he came on at Newcastle, and in those attacking areas where normally we demand a lot of work off the ball, we have to manage that through this heavy schedule of games.

"With Callum, I have confidence in him.

"I want him to come and play with confidence, work ethic and when you change the team, you want to at least sustain the levels, and maybe improve it, so it’s in Callum’s hand."

And it didn't take long for Hudson-Odoi to respond to Lampard.

Having started the game well, he almost provided an assist for Timo Werner before breaking the deadlock with a fine finish after being picked out by Mason Mount, sliding expertly home to give the visitors an early advantage.
