Callum Hudson-Odoi's England future in own hands after deciding to focus on impressing Tuchel

Callum Hudson-Odoi will be welcomed back into the England Under-21 fold should he decide to return after turning down a call up for next month's games against Romania and Kosovo.

The Chelsea attacker was left out of the 24-man squad named by head coach Lee Carsley having decided he was better off solely focusing on club football as he tries to win over Thomas Tuchel having been an unused substitute in their opening two Premier league games.

Carsley said that he respected the player's decision following "very good conversations" and made it clear that his availability will be reviewed before the next international break.

Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood was not selected for similar reasons by Gareth Southgate but the England manager views him as a senior player, meaning he was never considered by Carsley despite being eligible for inclusion.

Asked to clarify if Hudson-Odoi, who has appeared for the senior international team, is on a similar trajectory, the former Everton midfielder said: "Every player has got to be treated individually. I don’t think one player follows the same path as the player before him. I think we will revisit that in September."

Earlier Carsley had revealed the decision behind Hudson-Odoi's omission was Chelsea-related, though there is no firm indication of him leaving them club before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night despite reported loan interest from Italian club Atalanta.

"Callum is a player that we really like," Carsley added. "I’ve had some really good conversations with him and his advisor and Callum felt that it wasn’t the right time for him at the minute to come with England. He’s stayed back at Chelsea to work on his development there. I respected that decision and that was it really."
