Callum Hudson-Odoi given boost by Gareth Southgate over England future despite senior snub

Gareth Southgate has hinted that Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to be named in the England U21s tomorrow (Friday) afternoon but that he will fight for a place with the senior squad in the future.

The 18-year-old winger has just made his recover from a long-term injury after snapping his Achilles' tendon, but has already made a great impression in the first team.

He netted a goal in the 7-1 win over Grimsby Town, and then got an assist in the Premier League win over Brighton and the Champions League victory at Lille.

Hudson-Odoi has already won two caps for his country, however having just got back from injury, the young winger has not been named in the senior side for the matches against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Instead, he is set to be in Aidy Boothroyd's U21s side to take on Slovenia and Austria, alongside Manchester City youngster Phil Foden, who was also left out of the senior team.

"They are close," Southgate said. "We know the quality that both of them have.

Frank Lampard and the Chelsea players celebrate with the fans in Lille

"Callum is just back from a long term injury and I had a good chat with Frank about Callum and the situation.

"We are agreed that it was a bit early for the seniors. Without stealing Aidy’s thunder, there is an U21 squad announced tomorrow.

"Again we think that Callum is a player who is going to challenge for the squad moving forward, as will Phil be."
