Callum Davidson will gather plenty of information on Europa League opponent

Callum Davidson admits scouting upcoming European opponents in person will prove difficult due to COVID-19.

But obtaining footage of such high-profile teams will not be an issue for the St Johnstone manager.

Saints are eagerly awaiting the Europa League third-qualifying round draw on Monday, July 19.

The Perth side are set to face either PSV Eindhoven, Galatasaray, Rapid Vienna or Sparta Prague.

“We’ll be able to get enough footage and we’ll have people working behind the scenes for that,” Davidson told the PA. "We also have big games around Europe so it will be a test and will stretch our backroom staff.

“The players are focused and we have that goal of Europe. The first tie is going to be really tough whoever we get.

“It will be a really good game and will be a fantastic night for St Johnstone.”

Saints take on Stenhousemuir in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday before welcoming Preston North End - and 1000 home supporters to McDiarmid Park - on Tuesday.

Davidson has been running the rule over his squad with the Perth boss keen to get a good look at Cammy Ballantyne. The young midfielder enjoyed a successful loan spell at Montrose last term.

“I really want to have a look at Cammy because he did really well at Montrose,” Davidson said.

“It’s important in the next couple of weeks that I get a look at him to see where he is.”

Davidson was pleased to get 17-year-old midfielder Alex Ferguson out on loan to Edinburgh City.

He said: “I want to get Alex, Max Kucheriavyi, Sam Denham and Jordan Northcott playing.

“They deserve to play for the season they’ve just had. We didn’t have reserve games.

“It’s important we get Max playing games, no matter where. He has come back in fantastic shape and has real hunger and determination, along with technical ability.”
