Callum Davidson: "They went through the pain barrier for three points"

St Johnstone players will be given a break following what has been a busy - and exciting - week of football.

Manager Callum Davidson guided his Saints to League Cup victory last Sunday, a point at Hamilton on Wednesday and a win against Hibs at McDiarmid Park on Saturday afternoon.

Now, with no fixture in the schedule next weekend, the high-flying Perth squad will be given time for rest and recovery ahead of their final game before the league split on March 20.

And Davidson himself will finally have a moment to celebrate the historic Hampden trophy triumph.

He smiled: “We will definitely have a break now and I’m away home to celebrate winning the cup!

“The players will get a break now, it’s been a massive week for the club.

“They will get a few days off now - some of them celebrated on Sunday night but me and my staff didn’t.”

Davidson would be sipping away on his beverage of choice with a smile after watching his players dig deep against Hibs.

Liam Craig’s neat first half finish was enough to secure the three points.

“I was proud at the way they clung on and dug in,” Davidson explained.

“Football-wise it was probably the worst we’ve played but character-wise that was the biggest performance of the season.

“You saw the spirit and the attitude out there. They knew they had to win today and put a real shift in.

“So many of them were out on their feet. The last 20 minutes I was concerned but they went through the pain barrier to get the three points.”

Saints now sit only two points off the top six, with Ross County next up in Perth.

“I always look over my shoulder until we’re mathematically safe but it gives us a bit of breathing space, Davidson added.

“And we have given ourselves a chance of getting into the top six.”
