Callum Davidson should be in the Celtic frame after success that eclipses Steven Gerrard - Hotline

It's doubles all round in Perth after St Johnstone served up the greatest achievement in their 136-year history.

Saturday’s Hampden triumph over Hibs saw Callum Davidson and his men add the Scottish Cup to the League Cup to become the first non-Old Firm side to win the domestic double since Aberdeen in 1990.

No wonder the Saintees were singing on the Hotline while the Hibees were hurting.

And Stuart McLeod, Stepps, said: “Well done to Callum Davidson and St Johnstone. For a rookie manager with a provincial club and a small budget it is a remarkable achievement. This is a team that had a dreadful start to the season but with good organisation and brilliant coaching they delivered.”

Kevin Melvin, Cambuslang, beamed: “As a St Johnstone fan, congratulations to Callum Davidson and the lads. It was the best day of my life. This season has been the best in Scottish football for years. It’s been dramatic, unpredictable and exciting with trophies spread around. More again next season!”

And Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “Writers of fairytales couldn’t have scripted St Johnstone winning the Scottish Cup and League Cup in their greatest season and deservedly so. They may just have a team to challenge the Light Blues next season as none of the rest look like they will.”

Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, added: “After his incredible cup success, surely Callum Davidson will be in with a shout for the Celtic job. After all he's just became the second most successful manger in Scotland in last 10 years.”

Hoops fan David Bryce, Troon , also has his eyes on some of Saints’ Hampden heroes. He said: “Callum Davidson take a bow! Manager of the year in my eyes. What an achievement. There are three players in the Saints side who would improve Celtic - Ali McCann, Shaun Rooney and David Wotherspoon.”

Over to Hibs now. And after a third Hampden defeat in four visits this season Jack Ross and his players came in for flak.

Furious Hibee Brian Stavert, Dumbarton, said: “Great tactics by St Johnstone, go 1-0 up then put ten men behind the ball. As for our superstars Martin Boyle and Kevin Nisbet - after that display take the money and bring in players that want to play for us.”

Henry Moffat, Stirling, blasted: “Jack Ross is the most over-rated manager in Britain and has done nothing since getting St Mirren promoted. The biggest problem with Scottish football is the constant underachievements of Hibs, Aberdeen and Hearts who sign poor managers and fail in Europe and the cups. Aberdeen going for Stephen Glass instead of Callum Davidson sums it up perfectly.”

And John Scott, Grassmoor , said: “Congratulations to St Johnstone led by unofficial manager of the year, Callum Davidson. What an achievement and given their finances it's up there with Rangers league win. As for my team Hibs? If we can get millions from selling Doig, Porteous, Nisbet and Boyle we should grab it.

"We can then invest it on a new defence, especially someone who can defend the back post. Also a quality ball player in the middle beside a raring to go Scott Allan. Then bring on Leigh Griffiths. Hibs have sold our best to finance infrastructure for decades. We can now use that income to build a better team. Today was bitterly disappointing but the future could yet be something special.”

Tim Gibbons was getting all melodic as he emailed: “Isn’t it ironic that there’s a line in ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’ that says ‘when the sun refuses to shine’? Well, it certainly won’t be shining again in Leith as Jack Ross’ men, once again, well and truly Hibsed it.”

George Fairgrieve gave a fair assessment: “First of all congratulations to St Johnstone for a thoroughly deserved win, however Hibs are still succumbing to there Achilles heel, an inability to cover high balls through having one of the smallest central defences in the country.”

Last but not least there was unlikely greetings heading down the A90 from Tannadice to McDiarmid - but with a word of warning for Dundee United.

Ronnie Swan, Lochee, said: “Firstly congratulations to St Johnstone for both cup wins. I think it’s time Arabs stopped thinking they are entitled and are a big fish in Scottish football because of the 80s.

"I include my own self in this nonsense. Stop it now. I think the Ogrens could do worse than go down the road to McDiarmid and ask them how the hell they do it. They haven’t got all these academy hangers on with jobs for the boys. Having watched both Saints and Dundee the last few days both are light years ahead of the once famous DUFC.”

And Kenny Godd emailed: “So Mellon says he going to sign wingers to help Lawrence Shankland .. why did he let McMullan go to Dundee? Don’t bother Mellon as Shankland will be off as soon as he gets good offer. Defensive United are at fault for him losing his Scotland place.”
