Callum Davidson admits he’s ready to go AWOL this summer if St Johnstone serve up a trophy double with a Scottish Cup Final win over Hibs.
The Perth boss watched his Covid-19 ravaged squad book a May 22nd meeting with the Edinburgh club after two quickfire second half strikes from Chris Kane and Glenn Middleton sunk St Mirren.
With the Betfred Cup already secured, Saints have the chance to become the first side outside the Old Firm to lift two domestic pieces of silverware in the one season since Aberdeen co-management of Alex Smith and Jocky Scott achieved the feat in 1989-90.
It’s now unprecedented territory for St Johnstone as they prepare for a second showcase final of a campaign which has already delivered a top six finish and Davidson insists they can get another trophy in the cabinet.
He said: “You won’t see me for six weeks if we do it!
“Joking aside, I never look too far forward. Hibs are a fantastic side and it’s going to be a very tough game.
“Hopefully it will be another entertaining one – the Scottish Cup has certainly delivered these last few weeks.
“For a club like St Johnstone just to get to two cup finals is incredible. It hasn’t been done before.
“We’ll now try and prepare and get everybody right for the final. Up until now, I hadn’t even thought about what it would mean.
“It was a really good game and I’m just glad we were the ones to get through in the end."
Davidson was forced to cope with losing four first team players due to a Covid-19 breakout at his club and he revealed he's ready to put his players into lockdown if it means they are safe to make a return to the national stadium in two weeks time.
He said: “All the clubs have had to deal with at some point but it is very difficult. Nobody can prepare you for it.
“Once they make the decision you just have to get on with it. The really difficult one was the bus travel.
“We know it’s about keeping everybody safe and I think that between now and the end of the season all the boys will go to games in cars so if anything does come back positive it will just be one player we miss.
“It’s really tough for our squad if we’ve got four or five out like today.
“We were able to make attacking changes but didn’t have many defensive ones.
“My players were magnificent for me. They showed their spirit again and just kept on going.
“Hopefully we get the all clear this week and we can crack on with a full squad.
“This Covid-19 season has been really tough, what happened hits home that it’s still there.
“We need to be really vigilant and careful, it’s easy to pass it on and we are very vigilant and strict at the club. We just need to make sure we get everybody safe and healthy for the cup final, that for me is the most important thing.
“It hindered our preparation for the game a lot.
“We had to shut the training ground down. We probably could have trained but we shut it down as I didn’t want the virus to spread. We will now get the players tested again and hopefully move forward for the big games we have coming up."
