Callum Davidson issues St Johnstone fan plea as he vows to celebrate historic Double with Perth support

Callum Davidson achieved immortality as St Johnstone boss after making it two trophies in a row by winning the Scottish Cup.

And now he's ready to beg the authorities in Perth to let them celebrate it with supporters in their own city as soon as it's safe to do so.

Davidson achieved legendary status at Hampden by beating Hibs 1-0 and picking up his second piece of silverware of the season after lifting the Betfred Cup in February.

There were joyous scenes among Saints players, staff and chairman Steve Brown at the end.

But the McDiarmid Park club did it with no fans in the stadium and Davidson wants to put that right when Covid restrictions allow it.

Afterwards, Davidson struggled to find the words to sum up what he's achieved but said: “It's a shame the fans couldn't be here, even a small number.

“But it's something we want to do when it's safe. We'll speak to the council and the people in Perth to see when we can do it.

“Because it HAS to be celebrated and we'll make sure we do that properly.

“It's difficult to describe my feelings just now. I don't think what we've achieved this season will sink in for a while.

“Hopefully the players and the people of Perth can enjoy it.

“And the Brown family, who have taken the club from the bottom and built it up brick by brick.

“They deserve the success for all the hard work they've put in behind the scenes.

“They're massive St Johnstone supporters and they managed to get us here today so it's for all of them. It's a wonderful occasion.

“I don't know if Steve had a tear in his eye in the stand but if he did I'll give him a bit of stick for that! Maybe he's a big softie.

“People don't realise the commitment, time and effort they've put into the club.

“They put so much into St Johnstone so it's great for them and the people of Perth to have a club competing for trophies.”

Davidson was faced with the impossible question of how he could emulate or even top what St Johnstone have pulled off this season.

He joked that he might just disappear in Portugal for a year – then said his only priority next term will be STAYING in the Premiership.

He said: “Where do I go from here? I think I should go to Portugal for 12 months on holiday – that's probably the best thing I could do!

“I don't know. I'll go home, get out on the golf course and figure out a plan for next season, in terms of what we want to achieve.

“Hopefully we'll get some good news on Europe – we might have an opportunity to get into the group stage. That would be huge for St Johnstone.

“But next season, we just have to stay in the league – then we'll take it from there!

“Listen, people don't realise a couple of weeks ago, Steven Maclean, Alex Cleland and Paul Mathers were effectively the kit men.

“Because our kit man was off with Covid and we've only got one.

“The three of them got stuck in and did it all. That's what type of people I've got working for me and I'm very grateful for it.

“The apprenticeship I did as a coach has paid off. And I'll enjoy it because you can quickly turn into the best or worst manager ever.

“I've learned a lot in seven years and that's what I wanted to do. I didn't want to jump into management.

“I learned a lot from the experience with Tommy Wright so it's a big thanks to him for bringing me in.

“I've tried to take on board different things and I'm fortunate now to be in this position.”

Davidson went to his wife with the trophy at the final whistle, who was at her FIRST game this season.

He won't like the limelight but he's now St Johnstone's greatest ever gaffer after securing two trophies in one season.

He said: “I gave my wife a hug with the trophy and I've just said to her that if we'd lost, she wasn't coming back. Because she hasn't been to a game this season before today.

“She puts up with me. She knows how my Saturday's gone by the way I shut the door if we've won or lost.

“It's great that she was here today.

“I haven't even thought about any of that (being Saints' best boss). I'm just delighted.

“Don't get me wrong, I'll enjoy this season. I've been in football long enough to know there's a lot of ups and downs – so you have to enjoy the good times.”
