Callum Davidson close to St Johnstone appointment as Millwall grant permission for talks

Callum Davidson is set to become the next St Johnstone manager.

The Millwall No2 has been given permission to travel north to finalise his McDiarmid Park return.

The 43-year-old is currently travelling to Scotland to seal a deal that will see him become Tommy Wright’s successor.

Saints have come to an agreement with the English Championship club for Davidson who has a six month release clause in his contract.

The 43-year-old has served Saints as a player twice and previously been assistant manager to Wright for five years.

Since then Davidson has had spells as assistant manager to Gary Rowett at Stoke City and Millwall, as well as a spell as first-team coach at Dunfermline Athletic.

Bookmakers closed the book on Davidson’s appointment after a string of bets from the English capital.

Davidson will go in and work with the existing staff of Alex Cleland and Alan Maybury.

Former captain Dave Mackay and Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss John Robertson were considered but Davidson was chairman Steve Brown’s top choice when he confirmed his interest.

Saints hope to be in a position to announce or unveil Davidson as their new manager within the next 48 hours.
