Callum Davidson appointed St Johnstone manager as former player returns home

Callum Davidson has been appointed the new manager of St Johnstone on a three-year deal.

He replaces Tommy Wright, arguably the club's most successful ever manager and a man the new boss knows well having previously been his assistant for five years.

Davidson left in the summer of 2018 to join old friend Gary Rowett at Stoke City in the English Championship before moving to Millwall a year later.

The 43-year old is highly regarded coach and was an assistant to Gordon Strachan when he was national team boss.

He began his career at McDiarmid Park before heading south in a £1.75m deal to Blackburn in a transfer that was to help fund the club for years.

He returned in 2011 and spent another three years in Perth before retiring in 2014.

Davidson will go in and work with the existing staff of Alex Cleland and Alan Maybury.

Former captain Dave Mackay and Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss John Robertson were considered but Davidson was chairman Steve Brown’s top choice when he confirmed his interest.
