Political leaders and forces in Iraq considered the ‘reckless and violent acts’ carried out by Iran-pro armed militias against the US Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday as ‘unacceptable acts’ that subject Iraq to international isolation.
Some of these leaders called for protecting the political decision and distancing it from any repercussions.
In this context, Former Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi stressed the importance of protecting the Iraqi sovereign decision expressed rejection for Iraq to become an arena for foreign interests and proxy groups.
Earlier, both Iraqi President Barham Salih and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi denounced the storming of the US embassy.
“The attempt to break the US embassy in Baghdad is a violation of international protocols and agreements binding to the Iraqi government,” Salih said in a statement.
He added that “Peaceful protest is a right guaranteed and protected by the constitution but attacking foreign missions is against its interest and international reputation.”
“The message of the protesters has been delivered," Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim tweeted.
In this context, Iraqi politician Haidar al-Malla told Asharq Al-Awsat that what took place in front of the embassy is a proxy war because the Iranians are smart enough not to indulge in a direct confrontation with the US.
Iraqi political researcher Farhad Alaaldin stated to the newspaper that the US warned earlier against attacking its military bases on the Iraqi territories – he added that the escalation between Washington and Tehran has gone beyond the Iraqi borders to include the Gulf, Hormuz Strait, Yemen, Lebanon, and Syria.
The main difference is that in Iraq there are joint operations' bases by which US forces are an easy target, Alaaldin added.
