Calls to make 'accident hotspot' safer after fatal A9 smash near Grangemouth

Residents of Grangemouth and Polmont are calling for more to be done to make an "accident hotspot" safer following a fatal crash last night.

Locals have taken to social media urging Falkirk Council to install traffic lights or reduce the A9 speed from 60mph to 40mph at Beancross junction in the hope it will stop so many accidents happening.

A 77-year-old woman was killed there shortly after 7pm on Tuesday after her orange Toyota Aygo collided with a black Audi A5.

Regular road users say near misses are happening daily, with bumps happening monthly.

Falkirk East MSP Michelle Thomson has written to council chiefs asking for an update on their current plans for the busy junction.

In a statement, she told Falkirk Live: "I have been contacted by a number of constituents regarding the tragic accident at Beancross yesterday evening.

"I send my sincere condolences to the friends and family of the victim.

"I have written to Falkirk Council to ask for an update on their current plans for this location."

One woman who uses the road daily, but wished not to be named, said: "This has to be the worst and probably most dangerous junction in Falkirk region.

"I use this road twice a day and no matter what time it is, I see near misses daily.

"And when I say near misses, I'm talking about cars having to swerve out of the way to avoid being hit.

"I see smashes here on a monthly basis, they're not serious crashes, but it's still not the point. They're avoidable."

She added: "Yes, some people might drive a little faster than they should, but that's not the issue, the issue here is that the road lay-out is not safe.

"Last night's shocking crash has really shook the community and it's about time Falkirk Council stood up and made some major changes before another life is lost.

"It's about time a traffic light system was installed or the speed limit lowered from 60mph to 40mph."

A Falkirk Council spokesperson said: "Our sympathies go out to everyone affected by this accident. It would too early to speculate on any potential work until we receive the Police Scotland report that will established what exactly happened."
