Calls to introduce pedestrian crossing on dangerous Linwood road

Calls have been made for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on a dangerous road where a woman was tragically killed by a car.

Elizabeth Dunnion, 85, was knocked down on Bridge of Weir Road, Linwood, in October last year.

Since her death, her daughter Carolann Denvir has been campaigning for safety measures to be put in place.

A meeting was held in St Conval’s Church on Monday, where members of the public asked Renfrewshire Council for a pedestrian crossing and traffic lights to be implemented.

Carolann said she hopes something will be done so no other family has to experience the heartache her loved ones are going through.

She said: “I am glad the council realises there’s a serious safety issue with Bridge of Weir Road. Instead of zebra crossings, I would prefer traffic lights.

Richard Madden has been named on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people

“It’s a fact that visually impaired, blind and deaf people need to cross this road.

“I don’t want any other family to go through the trauma and heartache that my family and I are still going through.”

Around 50 people attended the meeting, which Councillor Jim Sheridan, who represents Linwood, claimed “demonstrated the strength of feeling about the speed of cars going along Bridge of Weir Road”.

He added: “The initial proposal is a pedestrian crossing at the end of the road, which is 100 times better than what we have got just now.

“A number of people suggested traffic lights, which they felt would be preferable.

“The council officers are away to look at some of the proposals put forward, but I think it’s important that we start the work as soon as possible because the longer we wait, the more chance there is of someone getting knocked down.

Paisley to be hotter than Madrid tomorrow as early summer weather arrives in Renfrewshire

“You can’t legislate for irresponsible drivers and that’s one thing we have wanted to speak to police about, in terms of doing more speed checks on that road.

“The meeting wasn’t a 100 per cent success, but we are definitely further on than where we were.”

Carolann added: "I can't thank Jim Sheridan enough for all his commitment and helping me."

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Council said: “The safety of pedestrians and road users is of paramount importance and we always work closely with communities and colleagues at Police Scotland to consider appropriate safety measures

“Colleagues from the Environment and Infrastructure team held positive discussions with community members on a range of options to enhance road safety on Bridge of Weir Road, in Linwood, and these will now be further considered as we develop the proposals over the coming weeks.”
