Calls to close New Jersey ICE detention center after another man dies

  • A Salvadoran man, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, 41, died on Saturday at Delaney Hall immigration detention centre in Newark, New Jersey, where he had been held since 18 June.
  • His death has prompted renewed calls from Democratic lawmakers and immigrant advocates for the facility to be shut down, citing longstanding concerns about medical care and living conditions.
  • U.S. Senator Cory Booker stated that Delaney Hall must be 'closed immediately and permanently,' having witnessed the conditions firsthand.
  • New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced an investigation into the circumstances of Lopez-Cornejo's death, accusing the facility of obstructing oversight efforts.
  • This marks the second detainee death at Delaney Hall during the current administration, and Lopez-Cornejo is one of at least 56 people who have died in ICE custody during this period.
