Calls made for weekend cut in public transport fares to reduce air pollution

A Dublin Senator has called for public transport fares to be reduced at weekends in an attempt to tackle air pollution.

Senator Catherine Noone said reducing fares would encourage commuters to leave their cars at home.

The Dublin Senator believes the proposal would help to tackle climate change.

Revised MetroLink plans blasted as 'ludicrous' at public meeting in south Dublin

She said: “We must be realistic about our climate responsibilities, however while many people are taking steps in their personal lives to reduce their carbon footprint, we must also recognise that we need to provide some economic incentive to change habits.

“Introducing a reduced weekend rate on DART, Luas and Dublin Bus is one such way we can encourage people to consider public transport as an alternative."

Several cities around the world have announced plans to introduce free public transport as a way of encouraging less dependence on private cars.

Relief for North Dublin families and GAA clubs as it's revealed they are no longer affected by plans for MetroLink

Senator Noone added: "The evidence from these cities shows an increase in passengers and a reduction in air pollution.

"Many more cities in Europe and around the world are planning to implement similar services.

“What I am suggesting is a simple but effective way of changing our transport habits during weekends.”
