Calls for urgent action on roundabout after man, 77, killed in crash

A roundabout where a man, 77, was killed needs 'immediate action' from the council to make it safe, say residents.

Last month, pensioner Edward ‘Ted’ Bevan was killed after being hit by a car near Broadway roundabout in Bebington.

Over 900 people have signed a petition on change.org, created by Edward Lamb, which argues that the roundabout is unsafe and the junction must be changed.

The petition read: “It is clear to anyone who has crossed the road on foot at Broadway roundabout that it is not safe for pedestrians to cross. There is nothing to slow drivers on the approach to this busy junction.

“We demand that Wirral Council take immediate action to make the junction safe for everyone before another serious injury or fatality takes place.

“Drivers must be forced to slow down on the approach to the roundabout by means of infrastructure such as raised crossings.”

The petition, which had been supported by 945 people at the time of writing, can be signed here.

It continued: “ Wirral Council has indicated that pedestrians will be at the top of the hierarchy of roads users but they now need to walk the walk on road safety - the era of the climate emergency demands that the simple act of walking is made safe for all.

“Pedestrians need safe crossings and must have priority at junctions.

“Making Broadway roundabout safe as a matter of urgency would represent a clear prioritisation of this goal.”

While Wirral Council is unable to comment on potential changes to the junction at this stage, a spokesperson for the authority said: “Our road safety team is supporting Merseyside Police in their ongoing investigation into this tragic incident.”
